Characters experience with solitude
Rebeca Buendia
Rebeca's solitude really began when she first came to the Buendia family. She came at the age of eleven with the bones of her dead parents and did little else but suck her thumb and eat white wash and dirt. At first they thought she was a deaf-mute. Page 47 says "She would sit in her small rocker sucking her finger in the most remote corner of the house. Nothing attracted her attention except the music of the clocks, which she would look for every half hour with frightened eyes as if she hoped to find it someplace in the air. They could not get her to eat for several days." She did get better though, and became close to Ursula and Armaranta. She went back into her solitude even worse after her husband, Jose Arcadio, died. She remained alone in her house with only a house keeper until she died.
Fernanda del Carpio
Fernanda solitude was not as bad as many of the other characters. As a child she was separated from the other children because her parents thought she was going to be a queen. But then she married Aureliano Segundo and joined the Buendia family. She ended up becoming very involved with running the family and the household when Ursula became too old. The times that she went into solitude were when she was worrying about the invisible doctors. But other than that she did interact with people and was very active in her children's lives(Meme, Jose Arcadio, Amaranta Ursula). She only went into full solitude after Santa Sofia de la Piedad left. Only Aureliano (Babilonia) was left in the house with her and they were both so far into their solitude that they barely interacted at all.
Santa Sofia de la Piedad
Santa Sofia's solitude was not too bad. Her past was not really revealed and she was mainly only mentioned in passing. No great details or insights were given as to her character. She helped Ursula with the candy animals and raised the children including her own. She did household chores and interacted with the family. Her solitude came when she was older and decide to leave the house and go live out the rest of her days with some relatives. She was never heard from again she she most likely died in her solitude where ever she was, when ever that was.
